Escenic Mobile Whitepaper
“A new generation of media consumers has risen, demanding content when they want it, how they want it, and very much as they want it.” Rupert Murdoch
Many, if not most, sites currently offer a static xhtml version of their website for mobile browsers. This approach relies on a misunderstanding similar to what could be witnessed on the first online news sites that emerged in the late 1990s. These had editions just like their print origins. Editions are really not a relevant concept online, simply a concept carried over from the limitations of print as a medium. I guess we just didn’t know better at the time. The uniqueness and possibilities of the web medium was not taken into account when creating the offering. The result wasn’t all that exciting either. Fast forward 10 years and we are doing it again. Serving a static xhtml version of your website for mobile users will not get anyone very excited either. Firstly, it unnecessarily limits your reach to devices that support xhtml. Furthermore, doing so will only reflect that you consider the mobile device as being the same as a personal computer only with a smaller screen. You take something created for web and simply serve a “mobilized” edition of that product to mobile. Same mistake different decade.
In this white paper you can read more about what Escenic thinks is a sound approach to the Mobile web. You will also learn how Escenic is able to support even the most ambitious mobile strategies.
