The Telegraph has returned to its position as the UK's number one newspaper website, having overtaken the Guardian in the April ABCe figures.

The lead is likely to change hands several times in the coming months. The BBC and The Guardian have been considered untouchable for a long time now. Being not for profit, they have a different set of rules to play by. The Telegraph recovering the no. 1 spot proves that commercial enterprises can compete for pole position while make commercial sense. Telegraph.co.uk's unique users increased by almost 10 per cent between March and April, and 153 per cent year-on-year, to 18,646,112. The Guardian dropped almost one per cent to 18,546,017 and slightly behind both we find the Mail on 18,039,943.

In the ABCe figures for April 2007, the Guardian were almost eight million unique users ahead of the Telegraph, with 15.17 million uniques compared to 7.35 million for the Telegraph, and just over six million uniques ahead of Times Online, who were then in second place with 8.9 million.
