About Escenic R&D

Escenic Research & Development is working on many different projects, both to create solutions to meet specific customer demands and to add new functionality to existing products.

Below are some examples of current work. Please observe that these are not currently shippable products. Contact us for further information.

Package-based installation

Escenic is developing package-based installation of the Escenic Content Engine and the modules. There will be packages available for Debian Linux, Redhat Linux, as well as tarballs (.tgz) for other operating systems - including Microsoft Windows with Cygwin. The packages maintain their dependencies, making sure that all the necessary components are installed.

Using the packages, installation of the Escenic Content Engine is as simple as typing the following command: "apt-get install escenic-server-engine-4.3".

CCI Newsgate integration

The Newsgate module adds the ability for a two-way integration with CCI 's Newsgate, and Escenic Content Studio can be launched from CCI Newsgate.

A story created in CCI Newsgate can be opened in Escenic Content Studio. If the story does not exist in Escenic, the story will be created automatically. When the article is stored in Escenic Content Engine the story will also be updated in CCI Newsgate. Related content, such as images, media and articles will also be updated in CCI Newsgate. Newsgate story folders can be previewed in Escenic without opening Escenic Content Studio.

Escenic Data Capture

Escenic is developing an advanced solution for creating both simple questionnaires and large scale surveys. The forms' design can be tailored to fit the site's design, and all received content is stored in Escenic Content Engine.

The results can be presented in a number of ways using Escenic templates, and the data is of course also available in XML format, thus making export to Excel, etc. simple. The Escenic Data Capture can be used for anything from "Question of the day" to conducting parliament election predictions.

Varnish cache

Escenic sponsors the Varnish open source project, creating a state-of-the-art, high-performance HTTP accelerator. Varnish is currently being used by some Escenic customers in very high traffic websites, providing excellent performance. Some of Vanish's major features are:

  • Partial Edge Side Includes
  • Load balancing
  • Administration and monitoring tools: Webmin, Nagios, Munin
  • Escenic integration

Edge Side Includes (ESI) is an XML-based markup language that provides a means to assemble resources in HTTP clients. Unlike other in-markup languages, ESI is designed to leverage client tools like caches to improve end-user perceived performance, reduce processing overhead on the origin server, and enhanced availability. ESI allows for dynamic content assembly at the edge of the network, whether it is in a Content Delivery Network, end-user's browser, or in a "Reverse Proxy" right next to the origin server.
